When pollen gets into the nose of someone who’s allergic to it, their immune system kicks into high gear by releasing antibodies to attack and kill these invaders. This process releases chemicals called histamines into the blood. These histamines can be blamed for the telltale symptoms associated with allergies: runny nose; itchy, watery eyes; sneezing; wheezing and congestion.
For those who suffer from seasonal allergies, these symptoms can be downright miserable. But this misery spells good news for the pharmaceutical industry, which by some estimates will rake in almost $15 billion by 2015 through the sale of prescription and over-the-counter allergy drugs.1
While many people find symptom relief from allergy medications, these drugs don’t come without their fair of share effects, ranging from mild to serious. The most common side effects include drowsiness, dizziness, stomach upset and blurry vision. Lesser-known side effects include increased appetite and altered taste and smell, as well as sexual dysfunction and depression.
This unpleasant side effect profile has prompted many people to find more natural solutions to cure their seasonal allergy woes. One potential solution that has received lots of attention is honey.
While it may sound strange at first blush, the notion that honey can provide allergy relief is nothing to—pardon the pun—sneeze at.
Why Honey?
Allergies arise from constant, continuous exposure to the same allergens. Eating locally produced honey for allergy symptom relief stems from the idea that the honey can act sort of like a vaccine—exposing your body to tiny amounts of the allergen so that your body builds up an immunity to it.
The theory is this: Bees fly from flower to flower collecting nectar and, in the process, end up covered in pollen spores. These grains of pollen end up being transferred into their honey. Consuming a small amount of this honey—even just one teaspoonful a day—can act as an immune booster and help to minimize your body’s allergic reaction to the pollen.

Treating allergies by exposing yourself to the allergen may seem counterintuitive. But the reason this method seems to work is that you are delivering very small, very manageable amounts of the allergen—via the honey—to your body over time. This allows your body to slowly get used to the allergen so that your immune system doesn’t go into attack mode.
However, in order for this honey remedy to work, it must meet a few key criteria.
For instance, if you suffer from springtime allergies that start around April, you should ideally begin eating your spoonful of locally produced raw honey in the early winter months to give your system enough time to build up immunity to the local pollen spores.
What Does the Research Say?
Not surprisingly, well-designed research in this area is fairly scarce. The pharmaceutical industry would not be too thrilled if something as easy, natural and delicious as honey could be used to relieve the same symptoms that their expensive drugs are used to treat.
Fortunately, there are a few studies that show how honey can act as an allergy symptom modulator.
One study published in 2008 looked at bee pollen specifically. Researchers gave daily doses of bee pollen to mice and found that it significantly reduced the activation of mast cells, a class of cells involved in the release of symptom-triggering histamine. The researchers concluded that the anti-allergenic action of bee pollen was caused by the inhibited action of mast cells, “which plays important roles, not only in the early phase, but also in the late phase of allergic reactions.”2
In a more recent study, researchers followed 61 adults who had diagnosed birch pollen allergy. They gave 44 participants either honey with birch pollen added or regular honey. The remaining 17 participants served as the controls, using their usual allergy medication for symptom relief.
The honey-taking participants consumed their respective honey from November through March. From April through May, they recorded their allergy symptoms and their use of medications.
Researchers found that, compared to the control group, the patients who consumed the birch pollen honey had a 60 percent reduction in allergy symptoms, twice as many asymptomatic days, 70 percent fewer days with severe symptoms and a 50 percent reduction in the use of antihistamines. In addition, the birch pollen honey group used fewer antihistamines than the regular honey group.
The researchers concluded, “Patients who preseasonally used [birch pollen honey] had significantly better control of their symptoms than did those on conventional medication only, and they had marginally better control compared to those on [regular honey].” They also stated that birch pollen honey could serve as a complementary treatment for birch pollen allergy.3
Our View
Granted, the research on honey for allergy symptom relief is scarce, but our take is this: If you’re suffering from seasonal allergies, and prescription or over-the-counter medication is either too expensive or has too many bothersome side effects, why not just give honey a try? It’s worth the couple of dollars to support your local beekeeper. Plus, buying locally reduces your carbon footprint.
In addition, purchasing local raw honey ensures that the product is not only safe for you, but also contains the beneficial pollen, which is almost always removed from pasteurized and filtered honeys. A report from Food Safety News states that most honey available in big chain grocery stores contains absolutely no pollen due to filtration and pasteurization processes.
This same report says that dozens of health organizations, including the World Health Organization, have ruled that “without pollen, there is no way to determine whether the honey came from legitimate and safe sources” because there is no way of tracing its origins.4
So, without a shadow of a doubt, buying local and raw honey is the way to go.
With all that said, though, there are a couple caveats to consuming honey on a regular basis.
First, honey can be (ironically enough) an allergenic food for some people. So do not consume honey if you have ever had an allergic reaction to it in the past. And if you are new to honey, use it sparingly in the beginning until you are sure that you can tolerate it.
Also, remember that honey is high in the sugar fructose, which can be problematic if you consume too much of it and have insulin resistance or diabetes. If you have either of these conditions, be sure to keep careful track of your fructose consumption, including honey, fruit and other sweets, and stay within the guidelines set forth by your physician.

Put another way, the Paleo diet consists of foods that our ancestors hunted, fished or gathered in the pre-agricultural era—animal proteins (meat, fish and some poultry), vegetables, berries, seeds and nuts. Why would anyone want to restrict all these food groups? Well, the theory behind Paleo is that our digestive systems were not designed to handle the types of foods that have become staples in our diets over the past few thousand years. And perhaps Paleo enthusiasts have a point.
After all, when humans stopped being hunters/gatherers and became farmers, overall health took a nosedive. In fact, obesity, diabetes and heart disease rates skyrocketed in the 20th century, when refined grains, dairy-based foods and processed sweets became dietary staples.1
These diseases aside, eating a Paleo diet would likely benefit those who have intolerances or allergies to grains, gluten and/or dairy or gastrointestinal problems (which often are caused by sensitivities to the grains or dairy).
According to a study published in 2012, researchers found that eating a Paleo/hunter-gatherer diet had significant benefits across a wide range of conditions.2
Researchers compared the Paleo diet with a typical Western diet and found that the Paleo contained more proteins and long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids, and less linoleic acid. Additionally, they found that a Paleo diet may reduce the risk of heart disease, metabolic syndrome, type 2 diabetes, cancer, acne vulgaris and myopia (nearsightedness).
Plus, researchers found that eating Paleo also held promise when it came to changing critical biomarkers, including weight, waist circumference, C-reactive protein (marker for inflammation), glycated hemoglobin (HbAlc) (a blood sugar marker), blood pressure, glucose tolerance, insulin secretion, insulin sensitivity and cholesterol numbers.
Researchers at the University of California San Francisco have concluded that a Paleolithic (Paleo) diet improves several health factors in patients with diabetes.3
In this study, 14 participants with type 2 diabetes consumed a Paleo diet, while another 10 people followed recommendations by the American Diabetes Association (ADA), which emphasized moderate salt intake, low-fat dairy, whole grains and legumes.
After just 14 days, the Paleo dieters had far better glucose control and cholesterol readings than the ADA group. Furthermore, those following Paleo who also battled severe insulin resistance saw significant improvement in insulin sensitivity. The ADA group did not.
In conclusion, the researchers stated, “Even short-term consumption of a Paleolithic-type diet improved glucose control and lipid profiles in people with type 2 diabetes…”
Similarly, a study published in 2009 found that eating Paleo improved a number of diabetes-related biomarkers, as well as risk factors for metabolic syndrome.4
In this outpatient study, researchers had nine healthy volunteers eat their normal diet for three days, then three ramp-up diets that had increasing amounts of potassium and fiber for the next seven days, then a Paleo diet for 10 days. They tested all participants at the beginning and end of the study for the following biomarkers:
At the end of the 20 days, researchers saw a significant decrease in blood pressure, insulin levels, total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol and triglycerides. In fact, eight of the nine participants enjoyed “consistently improved status of circulatory, carbohydrate and lipid metabolism/physiology.”
Researchers concluded, “Even short-term consumption of a paleolithic type diet improves BP and glucose tolerance, decreases insulin secretion, increases insulin sensitivity and improves lipid profiles without weight loss in healthy sedentary humans.”
Finally, a study published in 2007 compared a Paleo diet to the Mediterranean diet in 29 people with ischemic heart disease, as well as either glucose intolerance or type 2 diabetes.5
Researchers found that, after 12 weeks, those in the Paleo group saw a 26 percent decrease in glucose levels, compared to just seven percent in the Mediterranean group. The Paleo group also enjoyed greater improvements in waist circumference and insulin levels.
Researchers concluded, “A Paleolithic diet may improve glucose tolerance independently of decreased waist circumference.”
A study published in June 2015 suggests that the Paleolithic (Paleo) diet may improve cholesterol levels to a better extent than a traditional heart-health eating plan.6 This is particularly interesting because the Paleo diet flies in the face of conventional diet recommendations aimed at lowering cholesterol and enhancing heart health—namely diets low in fat and high in whole grains.
In this study, researchers hypothesized that a grain-free Paleo diet would lead to weight loss and a healthier cholesterol profile compared to a grain-based diet. Twenty volunteers (10 male and 10 female) aged 40 to 62 with high cholesterol (unmedicated) took part in the study. They adhered to a traditional heart-healthy diet for four months, followed by a Paleo diet for four months.
Results showed that four months on the Paleo diet significantly lowered total cholesterol, LDL (“bad”) cholesterol and triglycerides, while increasing beneficial HDL cholesterol, relative to both baseline and the low-fat, whole-grain diet.
The researchers stated, “Paleolithic nutrition offers promising potential for nutritional management of [high cholesterol] in adults whose lipid profiles have not improved after following more traditional heart-healthy dietary recommendations.”
To “go Paleo,” focus on foods that our ancestors hunted and gathered in the pre-agricultural era—animal proteins (meat, fish and some poultry), vegetables, berries, seeds and nuts. Avoid all dairy, grains, legumes (like peanuts and soy), starches, alcohol, sugar and processed foods.
Also, since the game our ancestors hunted and fished was wild (obviously) rather than farmed, you’ll want to always opt for wild, free-range or grass-fed beef and free-range poultry or wild-caught fish.
Additionally, research has found that the Paleo diet is low in a few critical nutrients—mainly calcium and vitamin D1—so be sure to supplement with these to nutrients in particular. Aim for 200 mg of calcium and 2,000 IU of vitamin D3 daily.
And, they succeeded… sort of.
As it turns out, the more we learn about how genes influence our health, the less we really know. And for all the testing and risk assessment that practically defines modern medicine, we still can’t say for certain who will get sick and who won’t.
That’s because heredity rarely carves a straight path to any disease—or necessarily any path at all. And now, as it turns out, family history is just one piece of the puzzle.
It’s a Family Affair
Let’s start with what we do know. Genes play a role in nine of the 10 leading causes of death in this country—chief among them being cancer and heart disease.1
Sometimes, this role is major. The BRCA1 and BRCA2 mutations are perfect examples of how genes can have a direct link to disease. Roughly 60 percent of women with these variations will go on to develop breast cancer.2 And this is one clear case in which genomics have enabled earlier and more effective intervention.
It’s also very rare. In general, heredity only accounts for a small piece of the pie where disease risk is concerned. In fact, estimates suggest that only five to 10 percent of cancer cases are purely hereditary.3
In conditions like heart disease and diabetes, the genetic waters can be even muddier, as environmental factors take on a larger role. Obviously, your family history provides important clues for your doctor to work from, but the bigger picture is much more complicated than a single risk factor.
Ultimately, there are non-smokers who still die from lung cancer. There are healthy weight people who still suffer from heart attacks. And, on the other side of the coin, we’ve probably all met at least one person who, despite one or several horrible health habits, continues to beat the odds.
But these are the exceptions to the rule. Time and again, research proves that environment does matter. In fact, it matters a lot.
The Real Driving Force Behind Disease
Your individual gene sequence may not be as important as the way those genes are expressed. And this comes down to epigenetic markers. These are modifications that turn your genes “on” or “off,” steering the course of your health in the process.
The catch here is that epigenetics aren’t predetermined. On the contrary, these gene changes are very much dependent upon your environment.
Take DNA methylation, for example. This process is one of the many ways that your body controls gene expression. It adds molecules to DNA in such a way as to affect its function. Errors in DNA methylation can shut down protective genes. And this, in turn, can pave the way to diseases like cancer.
But these errors don’t just happen on their own—and the trends can be reversed. Science is now turning to processes like DNA methylation as a possible focus for disease intervention. Testing early for abnormalities and blocking dangerous epigenetic changes with drug therapy is just one new route of treatment that researchers are investigating.4
It’s hardly the only way to override your genetic blueprint, however. Research shows that any number of factors—like diet, toxin exposure and activity level—can all contribute to the manner in which your DNA shapes your health.
The bottom line: So-called “bad” genes require expression to do their dirty work. They can be silenced, too. And the same rules apply to protective genes, for better or worse.
Genetic tendency in no way guarantees disease or health—especially where common conditions like cancer, heart disease and diabetes are concerned. The fact is you can prevent these diseases just as easily as you can cause them.
Changes That Last a Lifetime… and Longer
Clearly, a healthy diet is one of the golden rules of disease prevention. Everyone knows they should be eating well. But few people realize the serious epigenetic impact that your nutrition can have on your DNA—and even your offspring’s DNA.
That’s right. Your diet can affect your children’s DNA. And your grandchildren’s, too. Recent research shows that epigenetic changes aren’t erased with every new generation. And both parents’ diets can have a lasting impact on the cancer, diabetes and obesity risks of their progeny.5
The true reach of these epigenetic discoveries is only just coming to light. But it’s clear that diet is one of the strongest influences on your future health. And thanks to this emerging field of “nutrigenomics,” scientists may soon be able to develop personalized diet plans based on individual genetic risk factors.
In the meantime, we have to make smart choices based on the wealth of information that’s already out there. Assuming you are genetically predisposed to obesity, diabetes, heart disease or cancer—what then?
Well, for starters, here’s one thing you shouldn’t be eating—sugar. As dietary threats go, the latest research points to our nation’s sugar addiction as the most dangerous. A seemingly endless list of diseases traces right back to those white, processed foods, with the biggest offender being soda.
According to research published in the New England Journal of Medicine, sugary beverages directly interact with obesity-related genes.6 This suggests that sugar is much more than just empty calories. In fact, it seems to play a clear role in fast-tracking genetic tendencies toward obesity—along with the cancer, heart disease and diabetes risk that comes with it.
Now for the good news. Research also shows that a number of nutritional factors have the opposite effect—triggering epigenetic changes for the better.
For example, research has shown that resveratrol—found in grapes and red wine—can turn on longevity genes that mimic exercise, maintain weight and help to preserve youth.7 Likewise, folate—from leafy greens and cruciferous veggies like broccoli—can regulate the epigenetic DNA methylation processes that would normally lead to cancer.8
Fruits and vegetables can also influence heart disease genes. In fact, one recent study showed that it is possible to wipe out the risk associated with the 9p21 gene—one of the strongest predictors of cardiovascular disease—completely.9
How? Simply fill up on fresh produce every single day.
And that’s only accounting for epigenetic means of disease prevention. Ultimately, eating the way you know you should—a diet rich in whole, unprocessed foods and packed with plenty of fresh fruits and veggies—will slash your odds of any life-altering diagnosis in a number of ways.
Research continues to support the power of everyday food choices—things like cold-water fish, fiber, green tea, fruits, veggies, herbs and spices—to fight oxidative stress, soothe inflammation and nourish essential biological processes.
The end result is lower risk of cancer, heart disease, diabetes, Alzheimer’s and more. Simply put, smart nutrition keeps you alive. In fact, studies show that even something as simple as adding a multivitamin to your daily regimen could mean the difference between disease and health.10-11
Outrunning Your Genetic Hand
Exercise is an equally important part of the epigenetic equation. To this point, a recent study shows that exercise also influences DNA methylation, triggering critical metabolic adaptations in your muscle tissue.
These epigenetic changes enhance your body’s ability to generate fat-burning proteins. And they begin to take shape from the moment you start exercising—regardless of how sedentary you were beforehand.12
Clearly, the benefits of any workout may be more profound (not to mention longer-lasting) than once thought, especially if you’re predisposed to obesity. But more than that, regular exercise is just plain smart for your health—regardless of your genetic makeup.
One review of over 40 published papers revealed that routine workouts cut your risk of nearly two dozen different chronic conditions. (That includes cancer, heart disease, dementia, stroke, type 2 diabetes, depression, obesity and high blood pressure, just to list a few.)13
Meanwhile, prolonged sitting—whether in front of the TV or at a desk job—raises your risk of dying from any cause by as much as 37 percent.14
It’s not hard to connect the dots. If you want to stay healthy, you have to keep moving.
Live Clean, Live Connected
Diet and exercise may be the two main factors that can help you level the genetic playing field. But you shouldn’t underestimate the insidious role that environmental toxins play in disease formation either.
Not smoking is an obvious way to cut your risk of heart attack, stroke, cancer—you name it. Nevertheless, the toxins you can’t see—but still encounter daily—could wind up causing just as much trouble. These include things like BPA, PCBs, parabens and other similar disease-promoting toxins.

Resources like this—detailing which produce is safe to buy conventional, and which should always be organic—make taking on toxins a whole lot easier.
Of course, then there are the little things that can maximize health with age—factors like better sleep. Studies indicate that getting at least seven hours of sleep every night can significantly cut your risk of multiple diseases, including diabetes, heart disease, obesity and depression.15
Even something as simple as staying socially connected and mentally engaged can make a huge difference. Research shows that while genes do matter, older adults who continue to put their brains to work for them enjoy sharper memories past retirement than their less engaged peers.16
This, of course, suggests that age-related brain drain isn’t so inevitable, after all. And it also illustrates that, despite all the genomic breakthroughs of the 21st century, the real secret to staying healthy is anything but high-tech—or even genetic as it turns out.

The rats were randomly assigned into five groups:
After six months, the high-fat diet group displayed significant memory problems compared to the controls. However, the rats that took the antioxidants showed improved testing scores.
According to the results, a high-fat diet “impairs PAL and the combination of vitamins C and E and astaxanthin improves PAL deficits in the high-fat diet group.”

]]>The subjects included 90 individuals with degenerative osteoarthritis undergoing a total knee replacement. The subjects received either auricular acupressure on the same side as the surgery by embedding vaccaria seeds at four acupuncture sites including knee joint, shenmen, subcortex, sympathesis or at four non-acupuncture points on the auricular (ear) helix to serve as the control group. The researchers assessed the use of painkillers, the incidence of analgesia-related adverse effects, Hospital for Special Surgery scores and range of motion.
The investigators found that visual analog score—which assesses pain—was similar at 12, 24, 36 and 48 hours post-surgery. However, visual analog scores were lower in the acupressure group at three, four, five and seven days post-surgery compared to the control group. The researchers also determined that the acupressure group used lower doses of painkillers and had a lower incidence of analgesia-related adverse effects compared to the control group.
The study authors concluded, “Applying auricular acupoint acupressure in the perioperative period of total knee arthroplasty [replacement] is favorable for alleviating postoperative pain, decreasing opioid consumption and its adverse effects, and promoting early rehabilitation. Also, this intervention has the advantage of lower costs, fewer complications, simple application and high safety.”

]]>Yoga can reduce symptoms of anxiety and generally enhance mood, according to a recent study.
In this eight-week study, 52 healthy women were assigned to either a yoga group (60-minute sessions twice a week) or a control group. (People in the control group were told to not engage in yoga but to maintain their usual level of physical activity.)
The researchers assessed the effects of the yoga on heart rate variability (the beat-to-beat changes in heart rate), perceived stress, depression and state and trait anxiety. State anxiety describes the temporary unpleasant feelings that come up when confronted with a stressful situation, demand, event, etc. Once the threat goes away, so do the feelings. Trait anxiety is more of a personality characteristic and refers to the different ways people perceive threats and experience state anxiety.
While heart rate variability, perceived stress, depression or trait anxiety did not change in either the yoga or control groups after eight weeks, the women in the yoga group did experience a significant reduction in state anxiety.
