Types of People Who Need Vitamin B12

Posted by PS Admin on

Choosing the best form of Vitamin B12 supplement isn’t just as simple. If you don’t get enough Vitamin B12, it’s going to take a toll on your health and your body will take the consequences. Unfortunately, the statistics show that a staggering number of people - in fact, the majority of people – simply do not have or get enough Vitamin B12. Adults over the age of 25 have problems absorbing the nutrient from food sources alone. If you are vegan or vegetarian, the chances of you having a deficiency of Vitamin B12 are much higher.

Who Needs Vitamin B12?

Everyone. Yes, you read it right. Since Vitamin B12 is a water-soluble vitamin, it must be replenished every single day. Vitamin C is also a water-soluble vitamin and doctors often tell you that you need to drink it every day since any excess just gets flushed out of the body through your urine. The risk of getting a deficiency of Vitamin B12 is higher compared to oil-soluble vitamins. Thus, most people are really prone to deficiency if they do not eat a balanced diet and have wrong lifestyle habits.

However, there are other people whose deficiency is way up high. This requires them to take more of the nutrient than is recommended daily. The cause and severity of deficiency may vary as to the absorption and those who have had gastric surgery or pernicious anemia.

Vitamin B12 Patch

In addition to other forms of Vitamin B12 supplement are Vitamin B12 patches which are considerably the best available supplements these days. Choosing supplements is always a matter of personal choice. The patch is so easy to use compared to injections, not to mention injections are painful. There is no need to worry about absorption as the nutrient does not need to undergo the whole digestion process. Vitamin B12 Patch is also easy to use and convenient. Even when you are traveling and do not have a bottle of water to help you take a pill, you can apply the patch. If you take oral tablets, they have to pass through your digestive system before any of the Vitamin B12 is absorbed into the bloodstream. With sufficiently high oral doses, it is possible even for patients with extremely poor B12 absorption to get enough of this essential vitamin. Skin patches will save you the worry of getting enough since the nutrient goes directly into the bloodstream where it is needed. You won’t have to worry about the potentially problematic digestive system and all the process of absorption. This also makes it perfect for patients who suffer from pernicious anemia or other conditions that hinders absorption of nutrients.

Transdermal Patch for People Suffering Pernicious Anemia

Pernicious anemia results from prolonged vitamin B12 due to lack of intrinsic factor, a protein required to absorb vitamin B12. This means that a person has difficulty absorbing Vitamin B12. When your body is unable to digest vitamin B12 from foods such as beef, chicken, fish, and other forms of meat, chances are higher for you to have this type of anemia There are two forms of pernicious anemia namely autoimmune pernicious anemia and pernicious anemia from gastritis. Autoimmune pernicious anemia results from having intrinsic factor antibodies that interfere with the absorption of vitamin B 12. On the other hand pernicious anemia from gastritis results from the damage to the stomach’s parietal cells results in loss of intrinsic factor. Oftentimes, vitamin B12 deficiency that occurs in old age is labeled as pernicious anemia as it also involves the inability to produce digestive enzymes necessary for vitamin B12 renewal. Pernicious anemia can occur because of an autoimmune condition, or it can occur because of any type of damage to the small intestine’s ileum and the stomach. Among the risk factors of getting pernicious anemia are family history for autoimmune disease, family history of pernicious anemia, old age, taking medication that inhibit absorption of vitamin B12 such as acid reflux medicines, and having undergone gastrointestinal surgery, such as gastric bypass or ilium removal from Crohn’s disease.

Pernicious anemia is a fatal disease that is remedied by Vitamin B12. Similar to iron deficiency anemia, the only way to treat it is to replenish the necessary amounts of Vitamin B12 daily. This is where the Vitamin B12 Transdermal Patch fit perfectly to the picture. Since Vitamin B12 cannot be digested through the stomach once you have pernicious anemia, the best options would be to administer it directly to the bloodstream. Injections and transdermal patches answer this concern but the transdermal patch gives you the painless and more convenient option.

Transdermal Patch for Vegans and Vegetarians

The patch is also another option for vegans and vegetarians. Vegans and vegetarians lack the Vitamin B12 that can commonly be obtained through meat products. Transdermal patches have been on the market since the 1980s and research have proved that it poses no health risks. It works almost like nicotine patches, although vitamin B12 is obviously intended to remedy deficiency instead of feeding the addiction.
